A handoff worth paying for
- You watch your dog work and then handle the dog yourself with coaching.
- You get a written or recorded summary of cues, rewards and house rules.
- The trainer explains what to expect in the first week back, including a possible dip in focus.
- Everyone in the family who will handle the dog is invited.
- You know how to reach the trainer with follow-up questions, and what that costs.

Good questions
Before you begin.
How long should a handoff last?
Often one to two hours, sometimes split into two visits. Ask in advance.
Why does my dog seem different at home?
New surroundings and old habits compete. Expect to practice every cue again, slowly, in each room and then outside.
Can I skip the handoff to save money?
You can, but skills tend to fade when owners do not learn the handling. It is usually the least wasteful part of the bill.
Are lessons after a stay worth it?
A few can be, especially if problems return. Ask what refresher lessons cost.
